The Bronx County Hall of Justice is an 11-story, 775,000 SF complex located on a two-and-a-half-block site on East 161st Street, near the Grand Concourse in the Bronx, NY. At the time of construction, it was the largest single project in its history for DASNY. The building consists of two, 20-foot cantilevered cantilevered staircases, 47 courtrooms for the Bronx Criminal Court, grand jury hearing rooms as well as offices for the Bronx District Attorneys, Department of Corrections, Department of Probations, and judges’ chambers. The expansive civic plaza also covers an underground parking structure for 240 cars.
The Courthouse is the key to court facilities renewal in the Bronx. The move frees significant space in the Bronx County Courthouse and the Criminal and Family Court building, both of which were renovated for continued use by other courts already in those facilities.
Hill was brought onto the project by DASNY to replace a terminated construction manager and provide project management for the balance of the contract and change order work. The project faced significant schedule and budget challenges at the time Hill entered the project, largely due to unresolved claims, change orders, and other delays. The Hill team focused on resolving conflicts expeditiously, managing change orders according to our established procedures and protocols, and keeping the remainder of the work progressing smoothly. Hill’s services included construction management, program change management, change order processing and negotiation, construction inspection, project reporting, scheduling and delay analysis, claims analysis and support, and project close-out.
