Benteler Steel/Tube GmbH, a subsidiary of Benteler International AG, built its first U.S. steel pipe and tube manufacturing plant in Shreveport, LA. The plant includes a seamless steel tube mill and a steel mill and was built on 330 acres at the Port of Caddo-Bossier in Northwest Louisiana. The project was delivered in two phases: Phase 1 delivered the steel tube mill, while Phase 2 consisted of the steel mill. In addition to the mills, the project included support buildings, a storage yard, and auxiliary plant. In total, the plant encompasses 1.35 million SF. Benteler selected Louisiana after a lengthy, competitive site-selection process that included more than a dozen states and 100 potential sites. The project is one of the largest manufacturing plants in Louisiana’s history.

Hill provided construction management services for both phases of the project. The project included more than three dozen bid packages and involved such systems as deep foundations, railroad interface, and truck and railroad scales. Hill supported the project in a staff augmentation role, delivering resources and expertise as needed to integrate with Benteler’s project team.

Then-Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal said of the project: “This is a huge win for our state as it will be one of the largest industrial projects in the history of Northwest Louisiana and will change the face of this area’s economy. This project will bring valuable foreign direct investment to Louisiana, help increase our country’s energy independence and create thousands of new career opportunities for Louisianans.”
