The Chiren UGS expansion project addresses the need for enhanced flexibility and efficiency in supply management in Bulgaria’s natural gas market. By increasing the storage capacity of Bulgaria’s sole gas storage facility from 550 million to 1 billion cubic meters, the project ensures the ability to cover seasonal fluctuations in natural gas consumption and supports the integration of alternative energy sources, notably liquified natural gas (LNG). The enhancement will also boost the daily withdrawal and injection rates to 8-10 million cubic meters per day.
The project encompasses the construction of new above ground and underground facilities, alongside a connecting pipeline that will integrate Chiren UGS with the existing gas transmission system. This component involves drilling and completing up to ten new dual service injection/production wells and three reservoir monitoring wells, thereby bolstering the facility’s operational capacity. With these upgrades, Chiren UGS will play a pivotal role in ensuring the security of supply and fostering a more competitive gas market in Bulgaria.
Ultimately, the expansion will future-proof Bulgaria’s energy infrastructure, providing storage capacity and operational flexibility to accommodate increased demand and diversify energy sources.
Hill, as project manager and owner’s engineer, is providing design review, program management, supervision, and coordination between the project parties. Hill is also supervising all upstream activities during drilling and commissioning of the 13 new wells.
