Hill provided owner’s representative services for the renovation and expansion of the Miami Beach Convention Center. The project, in order to accommodate such high-profile events as the Art Basel contemporary art show, delivered a new 60,000 SF grand ballroom, multiple smaller ballrooms, and meeting rooms; incorporated a rooftop pavilion and outdoor event space; added 2 levels of parking to accommodate at least 880 spaces; and reconfigured 500,000 SF of exhibit hall spaces. The renovation also improved interior and exterior infrastructure and improve sustainability, including attaining LEED Silver certification. The facility hosts approximately 145 event days annually, all of which had to be accommodated while the project was underway with no compromise in event safety, security, or logistics.
Key elements of Hill’s work on the project included assisting in the selection and management of the project’s CM-at-Risk team, reviewing plans for staging and logistics, coordinating maintenance and protection of traffic (including pedestrian traffic), verifying quality assurance, site safety and security, and working with the entire team to make certain conventions and other events occurred on schedule and as planned. In addition, the Hill team worked closely with the center’s many surrounding construction projects to avoid any negative impacts or safety risks.
Work also encompassed rebuilding a seawall and a new 6.5-acre park along the Collins Canal and the restoration of a historic 1916 structure known as the Carl Fisher Clubhouse, named after the early 20th century entrepreneur widely known as the father of Miami Beach. The clubhouse is available for special events and receptions.
