Hill provided construction management services to global equipment supplier SMS Siemag (formerly SMS Demag) for ThyssenKrupp Steel’s multi-billion-dollar, state-of-the-art carbon steel processing facility built just outside of Mobile, AL. The Hill team performed tasks on the project in a construction management role and interacted with more than 6,000 employees on the project.

Safety challenges included language barriers, with more than two dozen nationalities on the project, and safety cultures unfamiliar with OSHA requirements/standards. The Hill team worked aggressively with SMS Siemag and their sister company, ISG, to help ensure all project team members attended site-specific safety orientations and understood U.S. safety standards. 

There were also numerous scheduling challenges on the project. ThyssenKrupp used an online version of P6 through Loadspring to allow each of the project participants to independently update their own portions of an integrated project schedule for each mill in the facility. 

The Hill team assisted with the development of SMS Siemag’s logistics and commissioning portions of the schedule as well as the development of the overall integrated schedule. Hill staff were also responsible for tracking nearly 100,000 metric tons of equipment deliveries from all over the world.
